Solar Shower Temperature
Let the sun hook you up with a nice hot shower after a fun day camping, fishing or hiking.
Heating the water in your solar shower couldn’t be simpler. Just fill with water and park it in the sun for a few hours. That is it. But what if you don’t have any sun? Or what if the sun has been beating down all day and the water is very hot.
Always Test Your Water Temperature
It seems like such a simple idea, hardly worth mentioning, but people underestimate the power of the sun. Always, always, always test the temperature of your solar shower water before sticking your body under the flow. You can get a pretty nasty surprise in the form of scalding or freezing water. I repeat, always test.
This Water Is Too Hot
Like Goldilocks, you are likely fussy about the temperature of your shower. You have a definite idea what you like and what you don’t. Well stop fussing Goldie. First of all remember where you are and what you are doing. You are taking a shower outside in water presumably heated by the sun. You certainly can’t expect perfect, can you? In fact, you can get perfect. You had the bag setting out in the sun all day and now it is too hot (because you tested, right?). No problem. Simple add a cup of cold water to your bag. Add as many cups as needed until the temperature is just right.

Brrrrr This Water Is Too Cold
Sometimes there is no pleasing Goldie. That girl can be a pill. But there is no reason you have to take a cold shower just because the sun didn’t come out or you were hiking all day and didn’t get to heat your water in the sun. If you just filled up the bag, you can skip testing. See, I’m not all that tough. You won’t likely be showering before you eat anyway, so go ahead and put some water on the fire to heat along with dinner. Then when you are ready to clean up, add hot water, one cup at a time until your shower temperature is just right.
Ready, Set, Shower
You’ve tested your water and the temperature is perfect. What are you waiting for? Go on and get yourself cleaned up. Who knows? Someone may want to share your sleeping bag. Keep this one thing in mind, though. Your water may be warm but you don’t have the same control over the air temperature. Portable camp showers are not meant to be a day at the spa. Get in, get clean, get out and dry off. Tomorrow is another day’s adventure.
